Facebook Flex is a new service in Rwanda that allows social media fanatics to access the world’s most popular social media website without necessarily loading data. In Uganda, Facebook Zero was the real deal before OTT tax came into the picture with VPNs becoming more popular than before. Well MTN Rwanda has partnered with Facebook to allow free access to everyone willing to use social media in whatever way

Facebook Flex will allow MTN customers to chat, post, comment, like, or share for free through facebook.com or the Facebook app. If customers wish to have the full Facebook experience, such as being able to see photos and videos, they will use a new feature on their Facebook account that allows them to switch seamlessly between the free and paid versions.

In simple terms, Fb Flex is a modified version of Facebook Zero that was popular on both MTN and Airtel in Uganda.  However, the redefined version might cross over to other East African nations the same way a new Passport was unveiled to merge the nations

Commenting on the Facebook partnership, Kojo Boakye, Head of Connectivity & Access for Africa said,

“We are excited to be announcing this partnership with MTN Rwanda on the launch of Facebook Flex. This is an important step forward in Facebook’s mission to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together”

As per the statement by Facebook’s head of connectivity, the social media giant seems to be focused on crossing over the free to access mode to more African countries. Given the OTT tax situation in Uganda and Zambia, free Facebook access could defeat the risks involved in powering up a VPN for a single bypass connection
