Botswana’s Debswana and Huawei have jointly announced the world’s first 5G-oriented smart diamond mine project at MWC Barcelona 2023. By the time of reveal, the Huawei-enabled smart mining solution has already been deployed in Botswana.

Debswana’s Head of Information Management Molemisi Nelson Sechaba said that the Huawei-enabled smart mine solution has been deployed at Debswana’s Jwaneng open-pit diamond mine, and the project started operation in December 2021.

According to the Debswana head of Information Molemisi Nelson, the project started in December 2021 and Huawei’s 4G eLTE private network solution provides stable connectivity for the Jwaneng mine in Botswana.

It connects more than 260 pieces of equipment which includes drilling rigs, excavators, heavy trucks, and pickup trucks. This enables the interconnection between the mine’s production, safety and security systems.

Hon. Thulagano M. Segokgo, Minister of Communications, Knowledge and Technology of Botswana, stated that, the Government of Botswana is pleased to see Debswana and Huawei’s joint efforts aimed at driving digital transformation in the mining industry.

Xu Jun, Chief Technology Officer of Huawei Mine BU, said that Huawei is committed to using its strengths in ICT technologies like 5G, cloud, AI, and IoT to develop smart mine solutions that are based on an industrial Internet architecture for customers in the mining industry worldwide.

Liao Yong, Vice President of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa Region, said that mining is the economic backbone for many Sub-Saharan African countries and plays an important role in the economy of Africa as a whole.

Over the past five years, Huawei has provided services to mining enterprises in several countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and Ghana. Looking to the future, Huawei aims at working with more local partners to accelerate mining digital transformation and create more value in Africa.

According to Debswana, building on the success of the project in the Jwaneng mine deployed together with Huawei and Botswana local companies, the company plans to extend the smart mining solution in its Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane mines across the country in 2023.

At the launch of its largest Global cyber security and privacy protection transparency center in Dongguan China. Huawei made a call for Cyber security unity if computer misuse attempts and cyber crimes are to be reduced across the world.

The event was braced by representatives from GSMA, SUSE, the British Standards Institution (BSI), and regulators from the UAE, Indonesia that digested Huawei’s call for a unified approach to cybersecurity based on facts and verification, other than suspicion and misconceptions.

“While we are deepening digitalisation across the world, cybersecurity is becoming more important than ever before

According to research from Cybersecurity Ventures, damages from cybercrime are set to reach US$6-trillion in 2021.”
says Dr. Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman, Huawei.

Pointing to the rise of remote work and the increased amount of time people are spending online as a result of the pandemic, he points out the globe is facing deeper cybersecurity challenges than at any other time in its history.

In order to address these challenges, Hu says, a unified, collaborative approach between corporations, nation-states, regulators, and industry bodies is required.

“Cybersecurity is a complex, evolving challenge that requires collaboration,” he says. “In some places there is still a misconception that country of origin affects network security. This is not true and prevents us from taking a unified approach to cybersecurity.”

The new transparency centre, he says, aims to change that and help facilitate collaboration across the ecosystem.

“At Huawei, cybersecurity is our top priority,” he says, pointing out that the company employs more than 3 000 cybersecurity professionals and spends five percent of its R&D budget on cybersecurity.

“The new centre will demonstrate solutions, facilitate communication and joint innovation, and support stakeholders around the world,” he adds.

The event also saw Huawei launch its Product Security Baseline Whitepaper, which represents a further step in its quest for cybersecurity collaboration.

The whitepaper sets out the end-to-end framework which Huawei uses when it develops, tests, and launches products to ensure that they’re as secure as possible.

“The baselines outlined in the whitepaper ensure all Huawei products keep to regulatory standards,” says Sean Yang – Director of Huawei Global Cyber Security and Privacy Protection Office.

In making the baselines public, Huawei hopes to further foster a spirit of collaboration and transparency.

“We want to share knowledge with all stakeholders, to help ensure that end-users are kept secure while having their privacy protected,” he adds.

In Uganda, Information communications technology (ICT) has evolved over the years with the presence of key players joining the industry. Among these, Huawei Uganda has shined as one of the annual enablers making ICT education a possibility in the country.

Now, on Friday 27th August 2021, the Huawei Uganda Managing director Gao Fei and the Minister of ICT and National Guidance Chris Barymonusi launched the Huawei ICT Talent development report showing progress of the company’s ICT education efforts in the country.

Research shows that people and organizations’ ability to access and use ICT services is more likely to drive economic development than ICT education and skills. This is due to the fact that access to ICT services will increase demand and create a vacuum for more talent to provide these services to digital consumers.

At the report launch event, Olinga John Peter stood out as the outstanding Huawei ICT Instructor of the year after training winners of the 2020 Huawei ICT Competition. The WInners progressed from Uganda’s universities through regional and global finals to WIN the 2020 competition.

While rewarding Olinga, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance lauded initiatives like the Huawei ICT Academy, Huawei ICT Competition, and Huawei Seeds for the future for helping Uganda’s vision 2040 and the 2014 National ICT Policy achievable since these initiatives involve skilling of young people which will help Uganda achieve socio-economic Development and be relevant in the new digital era.

The ICT minister revealed that Uganda wants to be the region’s top ICT-enabled country and to realise this, young people must have the skills, passion, determination, and support to develop and use their ICT skills to drive this country forward. He added that Government needs partners in the private sector like Huawei, not only in implementing technology solutions, but also in working together to build skills for the future workforce.

“Government has put digital upskilling a top priority and this is witnessed in the Vision 2040. Which is, Uganda shall develop and improve its ICT capacity, building efforts by adopting globally-benchmarked, industry-rated skills assessments, and training and certification standards. These efforts will be coupled with international industry collaboration in testing and certification standards,”
Dr. Chris Baryomusi – Minister of ICT and National Guidance

Furthermore, the ICT minister revealed that Uganda’s 2014 National ICT policy highlights strategies in human resource development including the inclusion of a comprehensive and regularly updated computer literacy module in the education curriculum using international benchmarks as a reference.

In Uganda, Huawei continues to play an active role in the country’s digital transformation processes through technological infrastructure and digital upskilling. This has been the case since 2007 when Huawei started its collaboration with the Ministry of ICT on launching the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) project.

Uganda’s State Minister for Higher Education Dr John Chrysestom Muyingo has today launched the Huawei ICT Competitions 2021- 2022.

Launching the third edition of the competitions at Serena Hotel Kampala on Friday, Dr Muyingo lauded Huawei Technologies for working with the government of Uganda to promote the delivery of quality education through ICT.

“We partnered with Huawei for the Seeds for the future program and over the years we have always made it a point to play an active role in the implementation of the digital upskilling initiatives in schools and universities across the country,”
the Minister said.

” The COVID19 Pandemic has presented the sector with profound challenges. No one foresaw the coming of this pandemic and the crippling effect it would have on all sectors of the economy including Education. Over 15 million learners have been left at home and we have been forced to rethink the delivery of Education for our learners.

With the broad experience that Huawei has developed over the years, I am confident that this partnership can help us to find more innovative solutions to these challenges which we are facing.

I call upon you to begin exploring the possibilities for delivery of infrastructure that will bring our education sector up to speed with the dynamic changes and resulting challenges that have been presented by the 21st century,”
he added.

Dr Muyingo further noted that as government they believe that the skills that are being imparted through programs such as the ICT Academy, ICT Competition and Seeds for the Future are relevant to our socio-economic development agenda.

“Government is committed to upscaling and mainstreaming ICT in the delivery of Education as a measure to facilitate continued learning during this lockdown. We have requested National Council for Higher Education to work with our universities and allow them to operate through Open Distance Education and Learning. I request all of us here to come together, share ideas and make this innovation a success even for post lockdown learning.”

At the same function, the Ugandan students who emerged winners in last year’s global Huawei ICT Competition were officially rewarded. At regional and global level the Network team of Uganda took first position, beating over 34 countries and 107 teams. As a result, the Ugandan team emerged as number one in the 2020 ICT Competitions at global level.

“I thank Huawei for their commitment and look toward to even more partnerships of this kind (ICT Competition). I would like to also congratulate the students who represented Uganda last year at the ICT Competition and raised our flag high by taking first position globally. This shows that our education sector has not only improved but is now competitive globally and a force to be reckoned with,”Dr Muyingo added.

On his part,Mr Yang Chen Frank, the Huawei Technologies Southern Africa Regional Vice President thanked the Government of Uganda for putting a good and peaceful investment climate that has enabled the global ICT service provider exist in Uganda since 2001.

“More thanks to the Ministry of Education and ICT for their constant support which has enabled us achieve not only our vision of bringing digital to every person, home and organization but also train and upskill Ugandans,” Mr Chen asserted.

He said under the condusive investment environment, Huawei has been able to make some achievements including training over 2000 Ugandan Youths, certifying hundreds through its 15 ICT academies as of today.

“This is the result of aligning our local strategy with national strategies-this is a very important principle that we stick to when it comes to business and skill and knowledge transfer.A big thank you to the Government of Uganda for creating an enabling environment for digital skill cultivation and ICT talent development as the future now depends on various ICT skills,”
Mr Chen said.

“Huawei’s ICT talent cultivation strategy in Uganda is flourishing while being sustainable due to a unique “learn-show-apply” structure, which provides not only training but also a global stage level to show capabilities and various internships and job opportunities to apply their skills. So Building Uganda’s ICT talent pool requires government-industry-university partnerships and collaboration that benefit all and reinforce each other to enable even stronger programs in a virtuous cycle.”

The Event was attended by Third Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Lukia Isanga Nakaddama (3rd left) who was the guest of honor.

The annual Huawei ICT Competition is a key piece of the ICT Academy Rocks Campaign. It targets university and college students worldwide, aiming to facilitate communication between schools, enterprises, and governments while building a robust talent ecosystem.

Through this competition, Huawei aims to challenge the students ICT knowledge as well as the practical and application skills, and ultimately, inspire innovation with the theme of “connection, glory, future”.

After six years of development, The Huawei ICT Competition has become one of the biggest event of its kind in Africa. The competition covers latest technologies such as cloud computing, AI, mobile networks, big data, that are pertinent to students’ competitiveness in the job market.

Over the years on the African region, Huawei has signed cooperation agreements with over 250 universities in 14 Sub-Saharan countries on establishing Huawei ICT academies. This cooperation has enabled more than 7,000 university students to obtain Huawei ICT certification, which makes them better candidates for ICT-related jobs. In Uganda, over 15 universities have signed which include, Makerere, Muni, MUBS, Soroti, Kabale, Kyambogo, Nkozi, Mbarara, KIU and IUIU.

Last year, Huawei held its second ICT competition in Uganda and a global ICT company reached out to various universities where over 2500 students registered to take part.

And by the end of the highly competitive event, three University students representing Uganda; Shaffic Nyanzi and Emmanuel Kiguli from Muni and Doreen Nalwoga from Lira University emerged among the world’s best at the Global finals. This was the first time for Uganda to qualify for the global stage after taking top positiosn at the Africa region final.

The three Ugandan students’ achievement was attributed to Huawei Uganda’s continued recognition and efforts to build a competitive ICT talent pool among the young generation, who will be an indispensable accelerator for Uganda’s post-COVID-19 recovery and digitization.

Cloud computing is on the rise across the world, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the leading and most preferred platform, competing brands have leveled up their offers, services and user management suites to best match the pace set by Amazon. Amogn these, Huawei Cloud has clinched a new position as the 5th largest Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider.

However, much as Huawei Cloud ranks as the 5th largest Iaas Provider, it’s services continue to be scarce in the public cloud domain, this can partially be attributed to attractive pricing from rivals like Amazon, Micrososft Azure and Alibaba, but also the level of innovation to catch users with attractive marketplace products on a Pay for What you use model.

Huawei underlined its innovative capabilities, walking away with several awards at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), which took place in Barcelona and online from 28 June to 01 July.

As the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry, Mobile World Congress plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for the space over the course of the coming year. Huawei has played a central role at MWC for some time now and the 2021 edition was no exception.

Speaking at the event, Ryan Ding, President of Carrier Business Group, Huawei pointed out that 5G — an area where Huawei is a leading player — is already demonstrating its potential in several markets, but added there was still room for more innovation.

Ding pointed to the progress of 5G technology in China and South Korea, where Huawei research showed rollout is already 20-times faster than 4G, with subscribers hitting 390 million in its home market.

Between 2021 and 2025, Ding added the combination of ICT and 5G digital infrastructure will drive economic growth of €1.9 trillion in China and €130 billion in South Korea, numbers proving operators were becoming drivers for national economies.

“We still need continued 5G innovation, we still need to grow our system, we need to coordinate telecoms standards and integrate 5G into our core production process,” he says. “5G innovation is an ongoing process and this is just the beginning.”

The event also saw Huawei launch a series of 5G products and solutions to promote multi-antenna technology to all bands and all scenarios to build leading 5G networks.

Supercharged by industry leading innovation, these newly released products and solutions are all the only one of its kind. They include Industry’s Lightest 64T64R Massive MIMO, BladeAAU Pro, Industry’s only 64T A+P Solution, BladeRRU Pro, Industry’s Only RF Unit that supports three low and three medium bands, and Industry’s Only Commercial FDD Massive MIMO.

Yang Chaobin, President of Huawei Wireless Product Line, said: “We aim to support operators to efficiently deploy 5G networks and provide first-rate experience. Huawei will work with global partners to innovate and share 5G benefits with all.”

Huawei’s 5G prowess saw it win several awards, including the ‘Best Mobile Network Infrastructure’ award at the Global Mobile (GLOMO) Awards for its BladeAAU product. Huawei launched the industry’s first BladeAAU product in 2019 to help operators overcome deployment challenges relating to the insufficient antenna space.

The Judges had this to say about the Huawei for BladeAAU series: “This stands out as a vital enabler for operators deploying 5G, ensuring support for commercially important spectrum in the years to come.”

Huawei also won awards for:

5G Telemedicine Solution Wins the GSMA GLOMO ‘Best Innovation for COVID-19 Pandemic Response & Recovery’

Huawei MatePad Pro has been unveiled as the world’s first Hamrony OS tablet and doubles as a new generation of the Huawei MatePad series that have always shipped Android in the past. Consisting of 3 models, the Huawei MatePad pro 12.6, and the Huawei MatePad pro 10.8 ship new technologies that have been inked by Huawei as productivity enablers for all users.

“The new HUAWEI MatePad Pro is the perfect tool that will inspire users to be more productive and creative. With the new HarmonyOS 2, users can take advantage of apps and services in completely new ways and work smarter than ever.”
said Kevin Ho, COO, Huawei Consumer BG

The HUAWEI MatePad Pro sports a 12.6-inch OLED FullView display with a 90% screen-to-body ratio –– the highest among all tablets currently available on the market. Each display ships a ΔE color difference of less than 0.5 for high color accuracy to deliver a crisp, and color-accurate picture. Also, an ultra-high contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, and support for a DCI-P3 color gamut sum up as key features that headline the new MatePad pro’s display features.

Shipping Harmony OS as the first for a tablet, the MatePad pro equips a Kirin 9000 series chipset which enables incredible performance levels on the tablet due to the lightweight operating system. Due to the Kirin 9000 processor performance levels supported by the distributed data management and task scheduling capabilities of HarmonyOS, the tablet can work together with smartphones and PCs to extend productivity and creativity whether in an office or drawing board.

With multi-screen collaboration support, the tablet can be used as a drawing board in Mirror mode and a monitor in Extend mode. It also supports cross-device file dragging and dropping, delivering a more efficient and collaborative multi-device experience on a PC.

However, to facilitate the collaboration with PCs, the MatePad pro was unveiled together with the 2nd generation of the Huawei M-Pencil. The Smartpen features a platinum nib for high-precision handwriting and low latency differentiation between 4,086 levels of force as noted by Huawei during the launch event.

Ranking as the world’s first tablet to run harmony OS, the MatePad Pro ships a new user-first interface headlined by an IOS-like design, home screen widgets, a bottom navigation dock, among other features designed to bring out full performance on the Huawei new generation tablet.

To the camera department, the Huawei MatePad Pro ships a triple rear camera setup. While there’s no camera on the front for the MatePad pro 12.6, the 10.8-inch version on the other hand has a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. Aside that, the 10.8-inch comes with a 7250 mAh battery that can recharge with 40W Huawei SuperCharge as the 12.6-inch version offers a bigger 10,000mAh capacity to deliver more uptime on the tablet.

At the moment, Huawei has not revealed the official MatePad pro price as yet, but based on the fact that Harmony OS powers the new generation tablet, it may be priced below $2000 to attract a new legion of users to the Harmony OS ecosystem. For now, Huawei is officially off the Android radar with the MatePad Pro sealing a new standard for future releases.

By Leo Chen, President of Huawei Southern Africa Region

Over the past year or so, digital transformation accelerated at an unprecedented rate in societies around the world. Whether we were working, learning, or staying in touch with friends and family, being online became more critical than ever. Even as vast numbers of people were adapting to their new realities, however, it became increasingly apparent that equally large numbers of people were shut out from being able to do so.

Given that the theme of this year’s Telecommunication & Information Society Day, which took place on 17 May, is “Accelerating Digital Transformation in challenging times”, it’s worth examining how big that gap is and how it can be bridged.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, approximately 800-million people are not connected to the mobile internet. Of those, some 520-million can access the mobile internet but don’t, because of factors such as smartphone penetration and lack of skills while 270-million cannot access the mobile internet because they don’t have the requisite coverage. Across the region, 4G broadband coverage is at just 21 percent.

The figures are even more stark when it comes to fixed-line internet connectivity. According to figures from research firm Ovum, there are just 6.6-million fixed-line internet subscriptions in Sub-Saharan Africa. While numbers are projected to grow three-fold by 2023, that still represents a small fraction of the region’s population. Those figures make it clear that the region needs to address a major internet infrastructure shortfall.

The benefits of growing internet accessibility and access are obvious. In 2019, in Sub-Saharan Africa, more than 650 000 jobs were supported directly by the mobile ecosystem and more than 1.4-million informal jobs in 2019. It also contributed more than US$17-billion to public funding through the course of the year.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has also established that a 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration in Africa would generate an increase of 2.5% in GDP per capita. That’s to say nothing of the benefits that better and more affordable mobile internet can have on education, healthcare, and government services. With easily accessible internet connectivity, people can search for jobs, gain new skills, and access government services without having to travel to a physical location and potentially stand in long queues.

As we have seen, the pandemic has caused economic and social devastation and changed the way we live, work, study and socialize, bringing about an era of social distancing. One of the most significant changes is the acceleration of digital transformation.

African policymakers have realised that access to broadband is critical for mitigating the effects of the pandemic and boosting economic recovery in the post-Covid era. With changes in people’s behaviours and mindsets, broadband will also continue to provide opportunities for African countries to leapfrog obstacles to sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development.

Of course, the responsibility to create access doesn’t lie with government alone. Corporates also have a role to play. At Huawei, we recognise this and have backed a number of initiatives that aim to help grow access in areas where it’s needed most.

In July last year, for example, we launched the DigiSchool project in partnership with a local operator and a non-profit organisation. As response to the call to ensure that all South African school children can read fluently for meaning, the programme aims to connect more than 100 urban and rural primary schools to broadband internet.

Additionally, we’ve rolled out DigiTrucks in several African countries, which enable everyone from students to entrepreneurs to learn how to use computers and connect with the digital world. Earlier this year, we also announced a partnership with Ghanaian operators to build more than 2000 base stations in remote areas of that country to connect the unconnected.

From a healthcare perspective, meanwhile, with broadband connections, Lifebank, a pioneering Nigerian startup that delivers blood and other essential medical supplies to hospitals. By keeping the startup and its riders connected, we can ensure that hospitals get urgent supplies when they are needed.

These kinds of projects, however, only serve to illustrate how much need for accessible, affordable broadband there really is across Sub-Saharan Africa. They represent a glimpse at the kind of access that everyone should have and which players across society should look to provide.

For more than a decade, the United Nations has recognised that the internet is a catalyst for sustainable development. As the events of the past year or so have shown, however, far too many people are unable to enjoy those rights because they lack access and connectivity.

We will all benefit from widening access and bridging this divide. There is no question that it should be a major priority for governments, corporates, and civil society players alike and that it should be an ongoing one.

Huawei Uganda has today launched a new series of free online courses open to anyone interested in building an ICT career with internationally recognized certifications. The new courses can be accessed via Huawei’s e-learning portal with no minimum education requirements for successful enrollment.

Similar to the existing Huawei ICT Academy curriculum that has been in existence for over 3 years in Uganda at public universities like Makerere University, Mbarara, MUBS, Gulu, Muni, Busitema, and many others. The new courses are free to all registered learners and come with a certificate of completion at the end of the course.

According to Huawei Uganda, the new courses can be accessed online and will be instructor-led in order to simulate the best in-classroom conditions for all students no matter their education level. Upon completion of any course, students will be able to certify for an internationally recognized certificate under the Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA) suite.

Among the courses that will be led by instructors from Uganda’s top universities include Cloud Computing, ICT Security, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), 5G, Cloud services, Data Communications, Big Data, and Data Center Facility Management.

In a bid to favour learner schedules, all courses have morning and evening sessions from which students can choose from. Additionally, all sessions are instructor-led with every class involving live interactive sessions between students and lecturers.

However, in order to enroll in any given course, a student must sign up through the respective course’s registration link for fast approval, enrollment, and gain instant access to the course program as uploaded by the respective instructors.

During a course’s duration, students will have access to e-learning materials and live simulators like virtual routers, switches, network masts, and servers. Upon completion of a course, students will be able to certify under the HCIA certification system for internationally recognized certificates similar to those offered by Amazon, Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, Google, and the Linux Professional Institute.

With no education background limitations, any Ugandan citizen can apply for enrollment into any of the listed free Huawei courses, and upon approval, no physical meetings with instructors will be required for all students, but instead, a stable internet connection will be necessary to attend all virtual classes from 3rd May – 24th June 2021.
