The COVID 19 Pandemic has affected businesses and several consumers worldwide with no direct timeframe on when the period that resurrected countrywide lockdowns will meet an endpoint.
At the start of the current lockdown period in Uganda, MTN decided to launch a Momo Pay driven contribution campaign to help the Vulnerable.
Through the campaign, customers were able to send donations to RedCross through MTN’s free to use Momo Pay service via *165*3*191919#. A total of UGX 21 Million was collected and has been handed over by the telco to the Redcross society.
According to RedCross’s Director of Health and social services Dr. Josephine Okwera, the received funds will help the most vulnerable people in Uganda on top of the RedCross being open to more donations to help affected consumers as she asserted:
We would really like to thank the community for responding to our call. This money will go a long way in making the lives of some people easier during this hard time. But as you are all aware, the lockdown has been extended so we call upon more Ugandans to come on board so we can rescue those that are worst hit due to the lockdown

While handing over the customer funds, MTN Uganda’s senior corporate affairs and public relations manager Ms. Rhona Arinaitwe inked the company’s usual slogan of being Good Together on every step subscribers take as she committed:
“MTN Uganda will continue to look at ways of supporting our communities and government, to ensure that together, we do everything feasible to get through this difficult time.”
Furthermore, the MTN Momo Pay donation Merchant code 191919 will remain open to subscribers that wish to donate to the Redcross society. However, collected funds will be channeled to the COVID19 National Task Force to expedite the body’s Pandemic efforts.
Having donated over UGX 1 Billion to the same task force, MTN Uganda’s efforts continue to rise with the diversion of the Merchant code to the COVID 19 task force now that previously collected funds have been handed over to the RedCross charity wing.
In the telecom operators ecosystem, the trio of MTN, Airtel, and Africell are the only telcos that have donated towards the COVID 19 task force to expedite the body’s efforts to save vulnerable Ugandans during this current lockdown and Pandemic period.
