IBM today announced that major financial institutions across Africa have selected hybrid cloud and AI capabilities from IBM to unlock digital innovation and continue their work to develop digital-first solutions, ultimately broadening access to financial services on the continent.

COVID-19 continues to accelerate the already rapid changes that were happening across the financial services sector in Africa, fast-tracking the adoption of digital technologies to boost financial inclusion.

With over 475 million Africans expected to be mobile internet users by 2025 GSMA –The mobile economy sub-Saharan Africa 2020, digital and mobile play a critical role in facilitating the delivery of digital financial services to consumers who transact on their mobile phones. As banks focus their efforts on open innovation, security and high-value services, hybrid cloud solutions have become increasingly important to deliver seamless and secure digital banking experiences.

“Enterprises, especially those in highly regulated industries like financial services, face unique challenges when it comes to balancing innovation and regulatory compliance,” says Alan Peacock, General Manager, IBM Cloud. “For decades, IBM has been fuelling the transformation of the financial services industry, bringing IBM’s trusted industry experience and leadership in security and data privacy to help banks modernize, transform operations and drive innovation.”

According to IBM’s COVID-19 future of business study, more than 59% of the organisations that participated said that the pandemic accelerated digital transformation, and more than 75% of responding executives indicated they expect changed customer behaviour to continue after COVID-19. As companies in the financial services sector are speeding up transformation, IBM hybrid cloud and AI solutions are supporting their drive to accelerate digitalisation in different parts of the continent.

“In the past year we have seen banks navigate changes brought on by a growing preference for digital and mobile solutions, increasing smartphone penetration and the demand for convenience, innovation, and simplicity from today’s modern consumer, says Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh, Regional, General Manager for IBM North, East and West Africa. “As banks across the continent take advantage of the opportunity to provide digital financial services which boost financial inclusion, IBM is working with Africa’s leading financial groups to deliver intelligent, cloud-based, digital-first innovation through IBM’s hybrid cloud and AI capabilities.”

Ecobank, the pan-African banking conglomerate, with banking operations in 33 African countries, has adopted a hybrid cloud approach to extend its reach to millions across Africa. Using IBM Cloud, Ecobank migrated their flagship mobile banking application to leverage the on-demand capacity of resources that can support sudden spikes in traffic on its mobile banking services. Ecobank also has access to other IBM cloud services that can be used to develop more innovative, digital-first solutions to enhance their own client experience.

With over 12 million customers on its flagship mobile application, Ecobank is on an accelerated digital banking transformation journey and is set out to expand its digital offerings and grow the 30 million digital transactions it already processes on its platforms. As part of this journey, the Pan-African banking conglomerate has built scalable business solutions which allow for ease of integration with third-party providers using their open digital banking platform for a growing customer base.

Pan-African bank, Nedbank has set out to deliver superior digital experiences to customers. To achieve this, the bank is modernising its core banking applications with a hybrid cloud strategy and has partnered with IBM to help bring digital products and services to life.

To take advantage of the flexibility and agility offered by modern cloud technologies on this digitalisation journey, Nedbank explored a hybrid multi cloud approach, adopted the IBM Garage methodology to implement IBM Cloud Pak for Integration.

Through IBM Garage, the bank was able to deep dive and explore fresh solutions and in a week achieved what would have taken them months. Faced with the need to integrate complex legacy systems, Nedbank turned to IBM Cloud Pak for Integration to help build a simplified and standardised integration approach to their cloud strategy. This enables Nedbank to shift their legacy applications into the cloud and integrate with other cloud-based applications they are consuming as they modernise and position for future innovation.

Attijariwafa bank, the Pan African Banking and Financial Group, has adopted IBM hybrid cloud solutions software to advance the digitisation of its banking operations, and quickly bring new digital services to its customers, all in a secure and flexible environment. Using IBM Cloud Paks that are built on Red Hat OpenShift, the leading bank will streamline and better integrate front-and back-office processes and to modernise business and IT operations.

By deploying IBM Cloud Paks, Attijariwafa bank will modernise and manage its core banking applications like its corporate banking application, on a secure, integrated and easily scalable environment. This will allow a rich and simple customer interaction while decreasing the time to bring new offerings to market. It will also enable the banks’ employees to focus their effort and time on serving their customers better.

This collaboration with IBM supports the digital transformation strategy of the bank and facilitates a full modernisation of the bank’s operations in an open, hybrid cloud environment.

United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), Africa’s global bank operating in 23 countries globally and with headquarters in Nigeria, has set a goal to grow its transaction volume significantly over the next few years and to deepen retail market penetration. To achieve this, they would be required to attract the unbanked, acquire new customers through digital banking and retain existing customers by adopting a “No Transaction Must Fail (NTMF)” initiative.

Using IBM POWER9-based servers, Flash system storage and IBM PowerVC (Power system virtualization & cloud management), UBA set up a scalable, private cloud environment that is cost-effective taking the first step towards embracing a hybrid cloud model.

Customers’ needs are evolving as they seek banking services across channels and expect personalization. Co-operative Bank of Kenya turned to IBM to modernize their core banking platform and reach their customers on different channels including mobile and online while offering customized services driven by insights.

For this, they required a technology that would also empower their employees who work across teams to simplify processes, optimize customer data, while also achieving goals like reducing infrastructure and maintenance costs. With IBM Power and FlashStorage solutions, they now derive improved insights on customer data, faster query resolutions, quicker time-to-market on new services across channels – all backed by high available, scalable, cloud-and AI-ready technology.

Banco Mais, a leading bank in Mozambique, turned to IBM to help streamline its business processes and reduce turnaround times for customer-facing services. In the face of a growing competitive market locally, Banco Mais needed to develop financial service products faster to retain and gain market share.

Banco Mais implemented IBM Business Process Manager on Cloud service and was able to start projects quickly and deploy process application solutions without the need to build the IT infrastructure. By turning to this IBM Cloud solution, they could develop, test, run and monitor their business processes at a fraction of the time it would otherwise have taken.

As a result, Banco Mais reduced turnaround time for loans by 60% and decreased the time it took to implement services that took 3 to 4 months by 85% to improve customer experiences.

Earlier this year, IBM announced the general availability of the industry’s first financial services-ready cloud platform, IBM Cloud for Financial Services, as well IBM Cloud Satellite.First revealed in 2019, the IBM Cloud for Financial Services is designed to help reduce risk for financial institutions, their partners and FinTechs and innovate quickly with built-in controls that are adhered to by the entire ecosystem.

IBM Cloud Satellite brings a secured, unifying layer of cloud services for clients across environments, regardless of where their data resides, delivering security, data privacy, interoperability, and open standards found in hybrid cloud environments.

At the launch of its largest Global cyber security and privacy protection transparency center in Dongguan China. Huawei made a call for Cyber security unity if computer misuse attempts and cyber crimes are to be reduced across the world.

The event was braced by representatives from GSMA, SUSE, the British Standards Institution (BSI), and regulators from the UAE, Indonesia that digested Huawei’s call for a unified approach to cybersecurity based on facts and verification, other than suspicion and misconceptions.

“While we are deepening digitalisation across the world, cybersecurity is becoming more important than ever before

According to research from Cybersecurity Ventures, damages from cybercrime are set to reach US$6-trillion in 2021.”
says Dr. Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman, Huawei.

Pointing to the rise of remote work and the increased amount of time people are spending online as a result of the pandemic, he points out the globe is facing deeper cybersecurity challenges than at any other time in its history.

In order to address these challenges, Hu says, a unified, collaborative approach between corporations, nation-states, regulators, and industry bodies is required.

“Cybersecurity is a complex, evolving challenge that requires collaboration,” he says. “In some places there is still a misconception that country of origin affects network security. This is not true and prevents us from taking a unified approach to cybersecurity.”

The new transparency centre, he says, aims to change that and help facilitate collaboration across the ecosystem.

“At Huawei, cybersecurity is our top priority,” he says, pointing out that the company employs more than 3 000 cybersecurity professionals and spends five percent of its R&D budget on cybersecurity.

“The new centre will demonstrate solutions, facilitate communication and joint innovation, and support stakeholders around the world,” he adds.

The event also saw Huawei launch its Product Security Baseline Whitepaper, which represents a further step in its quest for cybersecurity collaboration.

The whitepaper sets out the end-to-end framework which Huawei uses when it develops, tests, and launches products to ensure that they’re as secure as possible.

“The baselines outlined in the whitepaper ensure all Huawei products keep to regulatory standards,” says Sean Yang – Director of Huawei Global Cyber Security and Privacy Protection Office.

In making the baselines public, Huawei hopes to further foster a spirit of collaboration and transparency.

“We want to share knowledge with all stakeholders, to help ensure that end-users are kept secure while having their privacy protected,” he adds.

Cloud computing is on the rise across the world, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the leading and most preferred platform, competing brands have leveled up their offers, services and user management suites to best match the pace set by Amazon. Amogn these, Huawei Cloud has clinched a new position as the 5th largest Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider.

According to a report from market research firm Gartner Inch, the Huawei Cloud IaaS revenue has surged by 202.8% placing it on the top five list of cloud computing IaaS providers in the World. As per the report, this is the second consecutive year with over 200% growth for Huawei Cloud sneaking its way to the top list of IaaS platforms with 4.2% of the global market share.

Worldwide IaaS Public Cloud Services Market Share, 2019-2020 (Millions of U.S. Dollars)

Company

2020Revenue

2020 MarketShare (%)

2019Revenue

2019 MarketShare (%)

2019-2020 Growth (%)

Amazon

26,201

40.8

20,365

44.6

28.7

Microsoft

12,658

19.7

7,950

17.4

59.2

Alibaba

6,117

9.5

4,004

8.8

52.8

Google

3,932

6.1

2,367

5.2

66.1

Huawei

2,672

4.2

882

1.9

202.8

Others

12,706

19.8

10,115

22.1

25.6

Total

64,286

100.0

45,684

100.0

40.7

Source: Gartner (June 2021)

In 2015, HUAWEI CLOUD became one of the first vendors to invest in cloud-native technologies. The platfrom helped establish the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), and currently ranks as the only founding member and first platinum member of the CNCF, contributing more than 130 core features to the CNCF community.

By December 2020, HUAWEI CLOUD had launched more than 220 cloud services and more than 210 solutions. Through technology partnerships, the cloud computing wing garnered more than 20,000 partners, attracted 1.8 million developers, and launched more than 4,000 applications to the Cloud Computing marketplace.

Having launched in South Africa in 2019, HUAWEI CLOUD has experienced exponential growth in the cloud computing sphere. Currently, the technology giant has four points of presence in Africa: two in South Africa, one in Nigeria, and one in Kenya with hopes of rolling out more data centers to support highly available solutions.

“The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an increased move to the cloud, and need for technology enablers. We plan to increase the number of local, data centre’s as the demand for cloud services grows. We currently serve customers in 12 countries, with plans to grow rapidly as the need arises,”
said Stone He, the President HUAWEI CLOUD in Southern Africa.

In South Africa, Huawei has seen great business growth in public cloud and hybrid cloud. South Africa’s Automobile Association (AASA), a 91-year-old AASA is a non-profit organisation that provides road security, roadside assistance and vehicle-related services to its five million registered users and 700 000 subscribers. Through its partnership with HUAWEI CLOUD, they have overcome infrastructure challenges and reduced their costs by around 10% per year.

However, much as Huawei Cloud ranks as the 5th largest Iaas Provider, it’s services continue to be scarce in the public cloud domain, this can partially be attributed to attractive pricing from rivals like Amazon, Micrososft Azure and Alibaba, but also the level of innovation to catch users with attractive marketplace products on a Pay for What you use model.

Huawei underlined its innovative capabilities, walking away with several awards at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), which took place in Barcelona and online from 28 June to 01 July.

As the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry, Mobile World Congress plays a pivotal role in setting the tone for the space over the course of the coming year. Huawei has played a central role at MWC for some time now and the 2021 edition was no exception.

Speaking at the event, Ryan Ding, President of Carrier Business Group, Huawei pointed out that 5G — an area where Huawei is a leading player — is already demonstrating its potential in several markets, but added there was still room for more innovation.

Ding pointed to the progress of 5G technology in China and South Korea, where Huawei research showed rollout is already 20-times faster than 4G, with subscribers hitting 390 million in its home market.

Between 2021 and 2025, Ding added the combination of ICT and 5G digital infrastructure will drive economic growth of €1.9 trillion in China and €130 billion in South Korea, numbers proving operators were becoming drivers for national economies.

“We still need continued 5G innovation, we still need to grow our system, we need to coordinate telecoms standards and integrate 5G into our core production process,” he says. “5G innovation is an ongoing process and this is just the beginning.”

The event also saw Huawei launch a series of 5G products and solutions to promote multi-antenna technology to all bands and all scenarios to build leading 5G networks.

Supercharged by industry leading innovation, these newly released products and solutions are all the only one of its kind.
Twitter super follows is a new feature that is still work in progress, but will heavily redefine how Influencers and content creators can make money on the platform. Following an initial mention earlier this year, the new Twitter super follows feature has now been confirmed to be on its way as revealed by a reliable tipster.

Reverse App engineer Jane Manchum Wong first discovered the feature and shared user interface looks, categories and other options of the Twitter super follows feature. Now, her new findings point at the requirements, review process and eligibility inorder for a Twitter user start charging followers.

Twitter is working on Super Follows application

Requirements:
– Have at least 10000 followers
– Have posted at least 25 Tweets in past 30 days
– Be at least 18 years old

notably, “Adult content” and “OnlyFans” are mentioned in the category and platform sections https://t.co/qSEjh0ohm8 pic.twitter.com/yvkzx672V2
— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) June 6, 2021

Similar to Twitch prime and Patreon where content creators can earn money from their works by accepting tokens from followers, the Twitter Super Follows feature follows the same algorithm through which paid users will access premium content different from what regular free users can access.

Premium followers “Super followers” will get access to a user’s exclusive tweets, supporter badges and a community group by simply paying a subscription fee to support the content creator. However, for a Twitter user (creator) to activate the Twitter super follows feature, a set of requirements have to be fulfilled to qualify for a 10-day review process.

Twitter Super Follow Creator Requirements

A Minimum of 25 Tweets published in the past 30 days

Must be 18 years old

Before using the Twitter super follow feature, content creators must submit an application to Twitter. Upon submission, the Twitter team will then review the requesting profile to make sure it meets all minimum requirements and check the account standing whether it’s not run by a bot or received a suspension in the past 1 year before issuing a reply in 10days or less.

As per categories shared by Wong, content creators must select a publishing category before applying for a Twitter Super Follow activation. featured categories include Adult content, News, Gaming, Music,Sports, Tech among others from which content creators have to choose in order to activate a super follow button on their profile.

So, once the super follow feature is launched, Twitter Influencers will have a series of channels to earn money from the content they publish. These include brand messages/tweets, donations, and now a subscription model where premium followers will pay a monthly fee to access exclusive content aside from joining a community group run by the influencer.

All over the World today, Cybersecurity is a top priority for each and every person using the Internet. But as the Internet advances, threats as well advance with new hacking tools and malware created every day making cyberattacks more advanced and easier to pull off than ever before.

In Uganda, recent cyber attacks have targeted the financial industry with key focus on mobile money operators and commercial banks which have lost millions of dollars to hackers. By this trend, Huawei Uganda as a leading ICT infrastructure provider has made cybersecurity a top priority for all its partners in order to protect them from all kinds of cyberattacks.

The emergence of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud computing, 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has brought to book a new series of threats that can only be dealt with through collaboration from ICT companies, consumer enterprises, and Government to foster new cyber regulations.

On a balanced scale, ICT technologies bring huge social and economic benefits, but it also becomes critical to manage associated cybersecurity risks. For instance, the more digital transformation is enabled in developing countries, its the more cyber resilience becomes a must with data and privacy protection as key elements for industrial transformation.

Over the years, the more ICT technologies have developed, it’s the less sophisticated attacks have become since users are aware of all present cyber threats and hacking tricks that may befall them. When the Internet emerged in 1983, cracking and guessing passwords was the common trend of cyber attacks, but of recent AI and IOT attacks have made all old attacks obsolete.

To protect customers and partners, Huawei Uganda has outlined cybersecurity and privacy protection as top priorities that can be achieved through complete end-to-end (E2E) network, employee, and supply chain security. Through cooperation with customers to maintain stable, reliable, and secure networks in situations like natural disasters, conflicts, or hacker attacks, Huawei Uganda has stamped end-to-end security practices as key to fighting evolving cyber-attacks.

“We look forward to continuing to grow our open, progressive relationship with our partners across Uganda.”
says Gavin, the Managing Director of Huawei Uganda.

Blue Origin is an innovative aerospace manufacturer and spaceflight company that has not garnered as much popularity as companies like Space X, ULA, or the Soyuz Russian Program, but has made its mark as one of the best companies that will take back humanity to the Moon and beyond. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin is searching for its first astronaut in 2021 to take on its first human sub-orbital flight.

In November 2015, Blue Origin made history as the first spaceflight company to launch and land a rocket back to Earth with its New Shepard launch vehicle. Years later, Space X has become popular for launching and landing its Falcon 9 rockets, and recently the Starship (SN15) built to take humanity to Mars and the Moon.

So, Blue Origin has a solid innovation paper that has made it a technology-first company even with a slow pace (Gradatim Ferociter) of executing public ideas and launching rockets. Now, the company aims to end its suborbital New Shepard test flights it has executed for the past 5 years, by taking humans to Earth’s high-altitude layers in line with the rocket’s initial goal of helping humans explore what lies beyond the white atmosphere clouds.

On 20th July 2021, the New Shepard rocket will launch its first Astronaut crew to space with only 1 seat available to bid for on the Blue Origin website. According to the company, only a single crew member will fly to space to make history as the first astronaut to ever launch aboard the New Shepard rocket capsule. To bid for a seat, simply visit www.blueorigin.com to enter your bidding amount, and hang tight for the next 3 phases of auctioning.

The Blue Origin New Shepard Seat Auction Schedule

May 5-19: Sealed online bidding – you can bid any amount you want on the auction website (no bids are visible)

May 19: Unsealed online bidding – bidding becomes visible and participants must exceed the highest bid to continue in the auction

June 12: Live auction – the bidding concludes with a live online auction

How you can become an Astronaut with Blue Origin’s Flights

PHOTO: Blue Origin

Initially, the first Blue Origin New Shepard flight was slated to take place earlier in 2020, but due to the COVID19 pandemic, the company extended its launch schedule to April 2021 before finalizing on 20th July 2021 as the final first human flight date.

After 20th July 2021, the New Shepard Rocket will officially be open for business with the ability for anyone no matter their country of origin, or citizenship to become an astronaut in 2021 by flying aboard a sub-orbital rocket. With the current bidding process, the highest bidder’s winning amount will be donated to the Blue Origin non-profit Club for Future program in which the young generation is inspired to pursue careers in space exploration.

Currently, only New Shepard ranks as Blue Origin’s only available spacecraft that can fly humans to space since its New Glenn rocket – biggest orbital rocket is still under production with its launch date expected to be in 2024.

The New Shepard rocket was named after Alan Shepard who made history as the first American to ever fly to space 60 years ago. So, Blue Origin named the launch vechile after him to honor his historic flight, and continue the legacy by flying humans to space since less than 600 astronauts have ever been to space since then.

More so, one can’t become an astronaut without going through sophisticated space education programs, qualifications, and accreditation from agencies like NASA, JASA, Roscosmos, CNSA, among others. To ease this, space tourism launch vehicles like Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin’s New Shepard launched to allow anyone to become an astronaut by simply taking a flight aboard a world-class rocket.

Statistically, the New Shepard rocket has made over 15 successful flights to space and back above the Karman line – separates earth from space. All previous launched were done to test multiple redundant safety systems to make future flights 100% safe for all crew members. And now, unlike Virgin Galactic’s founder Richard Branson, the Blue Origin’s founder Jeff Bezos will not be the one to take the company’s first space trip, but instead, the highest bidder to buy a ticket to space will enjoy a sole trip for a once in a lifetime experience.

Huawei has today released its 2020 Annual Report. Growth slowed, but the company’s business performance was largely in line with the forecast. Huawei’s sales revenue in 2020 rounded off at CNY891.4 billion, up 3.8% year-on-year, and its net profit reached CNY64.6 billion, up 3.2% year-on-year.

Despite operational difficulties brought about by US sanctions in 2019 and 2020, Huawei has continued to invite KPMG to independently and objectively audit our financial statements. The document produced by KPMG is a standard unmodified audit opinion. No matter the circumstances, we will continue to embrace transparency by disclosing operational data to governments, customers, suppliers, employees, and partners.

In 2020, Huawei’s carrier business continued to ensure the stable operations of more than 1,500 networks across more than 170 countries and regions, which helped support telework, online learning, and online shopping throughout COVID-19 lockdowns. Working together with carriers around the world, the company helped provide a superior connected experience and moved forward with more than 3,000 5G innovation projects in over 20 industries like coal mining, steel production, ports, and manufacturing.

Over the past year, Huawei’s enterprise business stepped up efforts to develop innovative scenario-based solutions for different industries and create a digital ecosystem that thrives on joint creation and shared success.

During the pandemic, Huawei provided technical expertise and solutions that were vital in the fight against the virus. One example is an AI-assisted diagnostic solution based on HUAWEI CLOUD that helped hospitals the world over reduce the burden on their medical infrastructure. Huawei also worked with partners to launch cloud-based online learning platforms for more than 50 million primary and secondary school students.

With the rollout of HarmonyOS and the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) ecosystem, Huawei’s consumer business moved forward with its Seamless AI Life strategy (“1 + 8 + N”) to provide consumers with an intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios, focusing on smart office, fitness & health, smart home, easy travel, and entertainment.

“Over the past year we’ve held strong in the face of adversity, We’ve kept innovating to create value for our customers, to help fight the pandemic, and to support both economic recovery and social progress around the world. We also took this opportunity to further enhance our operations, leading to a performance that was largely in line with forecast.”
said Ken Hu, Huawei’s Rotating Chairman.

“We will continue to work closely with our customers and partners to support social progress, economic growth, and sustainable development.”

All financial statements in the 2020 Annual Report were independently audited by KPMG, an international Big Four accounting firm.
Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) is officially the world’s 3rd largest mobile ecosystem after the Google Mobile Services (GMS) and the Apple mobile suite for IOS. This is after Huawei’s release of its 2020 growth report that indicates statistics at 2.3million developers with 120,000 extended applications available on Huawei’s App Gallery store.

According to its 2020 data report, Huawei’s mobile suite growth is attributed to its fueled open source Harmony OS that has successfully engaged more than 20 hardware sellers and 280 application partners in the construction of a new open-source mobile ecosystem.

In 2020, the company confirmed that over 300 million devices will be using Harmony OS by late 2021. The operating system will be used on wearable devices, smartphones, smart home appliances, among others. On Mobile, the Huawei P50 is expected to be the first Smartphone to launch with a full Huawei Management Services (HMS) suite and Harmony OS ditching the Android trend that was affected by US sanctions on Huawei.

Under the Huawei Mobile Services suite, the Huawei App Gallery stands out as the official application store with several free and paid applications available for smartphone users. Unlike the Android Google Playstore, App Gallery can be used without a user necessarily logging in, instead, every Huawei smartphone comes pre-installed with the store to facilitate fast and secure downloads.

As a matter of fact, the growth of Huawei’s mobile suite can be attributed to its position as one of the world’s top 3 smartphone brands behind Samsung and shifting positions with Apple. And by late 2021 when more smartphones with Harmony OS are launched, the suite will eventually grow popular as a new breed of mobile devices will be available other than the usual Android and IOS legion.
