Once you fulfill the above criteria, all you need is to know the current MTN Mobile Money charges, and make your bill payment either through the MTN Momo App or the *165# Mobile Money Shortcode. In this article, we guide you on how to pay bills using the MTN Mobile Money shortcode as below.

1. Dial *165#, or *185# on your phone’s dial pad.
2. Select Option 4 (Bills & Payments).
3. Choose your desired bill, for example, UMEME Touch Pay to get Yaka Tokens.
4. Enter your account number.
5. Enter the amount to Pay.
6. Enter your MTN Mobile Money PIN to confirm payment.
7. DONE: Your Bill is paid instantly. You should receive confirmation from the provider.

In summary, MTN Mobile Money allows you to pay Bills to providers such as UMEME, DSTV, GOTV, Startimes, URA, Sports Betting Companies, NWSC, among others. All you have to do isneter the correct information and amount to pay your next bill with ease.

MTN MoMo is a fintech product providing consumers and businesses with an electronic wallet by enabling instant customer-customer money transfer, utility, and essential payments as well as access to digital and financial services through a single shortcode or MY MTN App.

At the end of June 2021, MTN MoMo had 48.9 million active users and over 581,514 merchants. The service also enables businesses to accept and make payments through the Momo Pay sub-service. And now, the new partnership will enable Flutterwave to offer MTN Mobile Money as a payment method to its business customers.

Through the new partnership, MTN and Flutterwave will positively contribute to the growing trend of increased mobile money usage, and penetration in Africa through improving local economies and livelihoods as well as create opportunities for customers across the continent.

A 2020 report published by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) revealed that Mobile Money accounts have grown to over 25million out of 36million active mobile subscribers across Uganda.

Mobile Money accounts were estimated at 24.7 Million in December 2019, and by March 2020, 25.4 Million was the total number of subscribers with more bullish spikes arising from the COVID19 pandemic period that has forced users to embrace Cashless as a normal payment method.

Over UGX 1.2Billion in mobile money prizes will be rewarded to lucky customers and agents. For full transparency, winners will be chosen through daily raffle draws broadcasted live on NBS TV and Bukedde TV at 8:20 pm.

The Momo Nyabo Together Promotion Mechanics

Every weekday, two customers that have used MTN MoMo to buy airtime, bundles, or other services, will be randomly chosen and will each win a guaranteed prize of UGX 1,000,000. Then, the customer will get a chance to triple the amount, and win an extra UGX 4million to make a total of UGX 5million that can be shared to a beneficiary of their choice.

Through a 5 Questions quiz asked by the live draw hosts, a customer will be able to win UGX 800,000 for every correct answer submitted.

Off the UGX 800,000 Win amount, the customer has to choose a beneficiary who could be a friend, relative or non-profit organization to give 50% of his Win amount to, meaning the beneficiary gets UGX 400,000 free as UGX 400,000 remains as the Winner’s Win amount.

Sending Money With MTN Homeland

In Uganda, popular developer wings like Africa’s talking were the first to benefit from the Opened platform that now allowed them to create more solutions with Mobile Money integration to them.

While the Open API window has already impacted developer solutions in Uganda, the programming interface is now available to over 5 counties in Africa with an ultimate prize for the top solutions developed on the Mobile Money API.

The new hackathon runs on MTN Group’s overall goal to bridge financial divide and overall winners of the new challenge will win over 2,500 dollars and a trip to the Ericson’s Innovation lab in Sweden.

This year’s Hackathon is run in partnership with Ericsson (MTN’s MoMo technology partner), to grand app developers based in Ghana, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Zambia the opportunity to create innovative financial and transactional applications using the MTN MoMo API platform.

Unlike the recent OPEN API Challenge conducted by MTN Uganda that rewarded a couple of finalists with cash prizes in various solution categories and no direct target platforms. The new MTN Group Hackathon is tamed to only Mobile applications.

So, developers will have to create financial / transactional applications with Android and IOS development tools with a scent of the Mobile Money API as the top 12 applicants per country will qualify for the next round that will feature 2 weeks of re-developing their ideas.

Luckily, the telco re-introduced its Momo Nyabo Promo as a spicer to the slashed sending rates and registered a pike of winners during the full 8-Week campaign period.

A few days back, MTN published a general notice with its new transaction rates already active on the grid since September 7th 2019. However, the reaction from subscribers has since then chunned the new rates as increments to the transactions board.

Though a majority of the users have so far digested the published rates as a hike in the telco’s sending tier and not just a pop back of the original rates. The Yello camp made its changes strict to the MTN-MTN sending tier and these are the new effective rates published.

The New rates as a Reflection of MTN’s Mobile Money rates

Unlike any annual changes on the MTN Mobile Money transaction tier board. MTN’s refreshed Mobile Money rates are simply a reflection of its original rates without any discounts or promo codes added to its transaction tiers.

However, the telco’s withdraw charges are unchanged and static since MTN has so far not announced any slicing Campaign on withdraws this year. Henceforth, the MTN shakeup is simply a replica of its original rates just like the Africell or Airtel transactions rate board.

Unlike the 2018 round of the Momo Nyabo promotion, this time around everyone stood a chance to win since the qualification standard was simply sending Money from MTN to MTN. Amazingly a member of our team also got a lucky entry to the winning dip with a UGX 20,000 Momo cash reward.

As a fact, MTN Mobile money rates keep changing year to year and we’re not surprised that MTN has yet again unveiled new rates for 2019. However, the camp has altered rates for all transaction tiers meaning the old charges are now dressed with new incremented looks.

Additionally, new rates for utility payments have been listed with a fair balance as compared to the 2018 rates. Nonetheless, these are the new MTN mobile money rates that you will have to face as soon as the 10th May 2019 sunrise pops up.

The Impact of MTN’s new Mobile Money rates

The same way Airtel is working on a Momo pay like service and Africell spicing up its version of mobile money is the same these competing telcos will pick a leaf from the new MTN rates and implement the same squeeze per transaction tier.

However much the new MTN mobile money rates seem to be centered to its subscribers alone. We shall not be surprised if the Airtel Money features the same rates in the next quarter. Furthermore, the utility payment rates appear bullish and digital payments like Payway are set to conquer a lions’ share as an alternative to using the Momo route.

So, the same way mobile money tax scared many subscribers from sending and receiving money on phone, it’s the same way transactions might bezel down to the pressure of high rates. Henceforth, as we are yet to see another service like Africell money revising its rates,  we expect to see at least a reduction in the next quarter to make mobile money the perfect financial inclusion driver than ever before.
