Mostly it’s important to get a free TECNO, Infinix, or Itel Smartphone on loan if you are upgrading from a feature phone. Either way, if you have a smart feature phone like the MTN Kamunye, you may wish to upgrade to the world of touching icons on a 6-inch sized screen.

1. Visit a VIP SHOP

Officially, TECNO and Infinix offer smartphones on loan if you visit any VIP shop across Uganda. Mostly, these shops are fully branded a single brand such as Infinix and you simply notify any of the sales agents that you wish to get a smartphone, but pay back later to receive the necessary support. To get a device, make sure you have the following:

• A Valid National ID Card
• The Minimum Deposit Balance. Amount varies depending on the smartphone.

2. Visit an MTN Service Center and Sign the necessary paperwork

In partnership with TakeNow, MTN Uganda now offers smartphones on loan to all eligible customers. Aside from the MTN Kabode Supa, you can now get a free TECNO, Infinix, or Itel Smartphone on loan and pay back later from any MTN service center.

However, just like the official VIP shop offers, you are required to have a down deposit in order to get a smartphone of your choice. More so, you are required to pay the balance in 6 months without fail inorder to keep the device functioning with the monthly installations below:

Upon paying the initial payment deposit for your desired smartphone, you are required to have the following in order to receive your device.

• A Valid National ID
• An active MTN Uganda SIMCard

Conclusion

If you don’t have a smartphone, you have little to no excuses for not having one in Uganda. You can get a free TECNO, Infinix, or Itel Smartphone on loan and pay back later on your own pace. This helps you avoid the hustle and getting a full amount to pay for the smartphone at once.

DAS technology is commonly used in large buildings like Hospitals, Shopping malls, office buildings, and hotels with poor network reception. It uses a system of distributed small antennas that are connected to a single common source or gateway and distributed throughout an area to improve wireless coverage.

As per Airtel Uganda’s smart poles implementation, the telco notes that they are designed to facilitate the transition to 5G network technology that was recently announced, as ATC Uganda also continues to work closely with mobile network operators to support the transition to 5G.

While speaking at the launch of the Smart Pole in downtown Kampala, Mr. Manoj, the Airtel Uganda Managing Director, noted that the telco Airtel has previously received hundreds of complaints for weak signals in high-density areas like Luwum Street.

To address this, the telco decided to challenge the ATC and Airtel engineering teams to come up with a lasting solution since users in these areas rely a lot on mobile networks for business hence the introduction of smart poles as he said.

“We have already established 6 poles in the city. Additionally, We are committed to reducing carbon emissions in our services therefore, we thank ATC for providing a green solution.”

In return, the CEO of ATC Uganda Dorothy Kabagambe Ssemanda appreciated Airtel Uganda for the strategic partnership aimed at improving the quality of telecommunications services in Kampala.

While at the launch, the deputy director of KCCA expressed his gratitude to Airtel and ATC Uganda for partnering with the City Authority on their mission to create a smart city. Since may businesses in the city rely on voice and data network traffic, providing the smart poles will accelerate the network reception for people working in buildings across Kampala.

For now, as 5G is the main goal Airtel Uganda has set to achieve in 2023, the introduction of smart poles makes it easy for business people to access quality voice and data network speeds to meet their goals.

Unlike MTN Uganda, Airtel 5G is not just a demo, the telco has announced that its network edge is now in standby mode as it awaits spectrum and channel assignment from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).

During the announcement made at the Clement Hill based Airtel Uganda head offices, Mr. Manoj Murai, the telco’s managing director noted that over 11 network towers have been successfully tested with 5G technology in Uganda.

Last year, Airtel Uganda embarked on a mission of increasing its network coverage across the country with the construction of multiple intermediate network towers. By design, the new towers follow an ever-green design where a single pole is mounted with sector antennas on top with tree-like branches.

If the installation of multiple network towers across Uganda was to prepare for a switch to Airtel 5G, we can’t confirm, but highly suspect that 5G is the plan behind the Intermediate towers installed to improve customer signal reception with more sectorial antenna authority in an area.

Progress on Airtel 5G in Uganda: a PR bluff or fact to believe?

Due to the fact that Airtel 5G is a fresh announcement with no proof of usage showcased by Airtel Uganda, we can’t confirm that the telco has truly tested the technology as they say. As a point to note, MTN Uganda run a public 5G trial which we gladly witnessed at the telco’s Nyonyi Gardens offices in 2019.

For Airtel 5G, we did not receive an invitation to attend the launch ceremony, but we followed the announcement closely on Twitter. As per Tweets and official communication from the event, the telco didn’t reveal any actual speed tests run on the towers to the press, and so, we can’t confirm whether it’s true the telco run a 5G test across 11 towers in Kampala as they announced.

However, you can’t rule out the company’s official position noting that Airtel 5G is in the pipeline, but since Technology is best announced while in action, nothing can be taken as a fact, but simply a future plan to have the Network band in Uganda.

At the moment, Airtel 4G is the fastest mobile network technology in Uganda beating MTN Uganda to second. For Airtel 5G in Uganda, we can safely call the network technology a PR bluff much as Airtel already has 5G available in other countries such as India.

Our expectations on Airtel 5G in 2023

Airtel 4G offers amazingly super-fast Internet, when bundled with the Home broadband kit, all a customer can think of is super fast downloads and uploads. However, since Airtel 5G is still work in progress, and the announcement was made with no actual speed tests or media tours, in our view, don’t expect the network service in 2023.

In a nutshell, Airtel is 5G ready after conducting tests on 11 towers in Uganda as noted during the telco’s announcement ceremony. When rolled out, we expect the service to tag along special internet bundles since a demo by MTN Uganda showed the telco achieving 800Mbps back in 2019.

By Ugandan standards, current data bundles will deplete in seconds since 5G offers super fast speeds based on MTN’s recent achievement and achievable 5G network speeds offered by Airtel in countries like India.

By the time of writing, thousands of Airtel customers in Uganda still rely on the 3G network for communications, and 4G is only used in towns across the country. So, how about 5G, we can safely call this a PR bluff until an actual public demo is carried out just like the 2019 MTN announcement.

But, with the little popularity of the service, we got an Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet connection to our premises, all thanks to a printed flyer we picked from a service center with an agent’s name on it.

The process was fast as compared to other broadband providers that delay you for weeks, upon calling the agent’s number on the flyer, he simply sent us the paperwork and immediately assigned us to an installer that put up the service in under 24 hours after payment. Isn’t that amazing? Well, it was, a super fast installation with a hustle-free payment process via Airtel Money.

After 3 months of medium to heavy usage mixed in our traffic, our smiles for the Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet trial had turned into pure frustration, as explained in our review of the following sections.

CONNECTION SPEEDS

Upon installation, Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet installers promise you an improved service just in case you don’t appreciate the immediate connection speeds you get. In our experience, we paid for a 30Mbps package, and by the agent’s explanation, the service auto-scales between downloads and uploads whenever 2 or more people are connected to the WiFi network.

During our entire Airtel Xtream Max connection duration, the network averaged 12Mbps as the peak download speed, and 22Mbps as the upload speed. By usability, we tried streaming 720p 24fps footage to Youtube, and our stream software dropped packets at an average of 30.4%.

Well, on downloads, the location of content matters, so, we used two test sites, getintopc.com, and wetransfer.com to download files. On Average, a single 5GB file took us 1 hour and 50 minutes to download from any of the sites.

In summary, the advertised speeds (30Mbps for our package) are not the real connection speeds the Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet connection offers. In our experience, by speeds, this is moderate since other providers instead enforce FUPs when downloading bulk content, at least, its True unlimited Internet advertised with Juicy packages that taste like Lemon.

RELIABILITY

Airtel Xtream Max is delivered via Microwave equipment, to be exact, expect a Cambium Networks dish installed at your premises serving the connection through an indoor router (a Unifi Unicube router in most cases). This means, the connection is subject to interference depending on the devices in your neighborhood.

By our standard, the Airtel Xtream Max unlimited Internet connection is very very reliable as compared to what other companies using the same technology offer. By rating, expect 95% uptime on the service which is a good ranking, you can expect less downtimes when the Internet goes off, when it does, interference can be attributed to the downtime.

BILLING and PAYMENTS

Imagine receiving an Invoice for a service you have not used. That’s what the Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet offers. Imagine a situation where you get a UMEME blackout for 1 month straight due to a vandalized Transformer in your area. That means you will pay for your Xtream Max Internet even when you didn’t use it for that month.

In the current market, all Unlimited Providers in Uganda, at least for those we have tried will only bill you for a service you will use. What this means is, you pay for your monthly service, but get cut off the service once your month expires. You can choose to pay or not pay for another month depending on your experience.

For Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet, you pay one month in advance before you think of using the connection. For example, in February, you are required to pay for March, or your connection is disconnected by 20th February regardless of whether you paid for Feb or No.

To pay, you have to dial a shortcode, and enter the Airtel Cash Office business number, then your assigned account number. This is a lengthy process that can be simplified by a dedicated shortcode or service under Airtel Money‘s pay Bills option. But well, it’s Uganda, a customer can only cry less.

CUSTOMER CARE SUPPORT

if you have had a moment with a moody bank teller in Uganda, consider it less to what you will experience with the Airtel Xtream Max service. In our experience, there was no dedicated hotline to report downtimes or burning issues on. The best customer care you get is from a personal account manager that’s assigned to your account, but mark this, they may never pick your calls.

SInce the Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet service is a product of Airtel Business, we tried reaching the business customer care team, but all we got was a notification that they don’t work on the service, like its a whole different department.

When sending Invoices, the customer care team is very fast and efficient since they send a URA billing notification before the actual Invoice actually lands in your mail box. They request to send customer care queries and complaints to: creditteamuganda@ug.airtel.com, but sent emails never get replied to, even when you tag your assigned account manager, they may never reply back or delay to respond except if they’re sending an Invoice -> which comes first, and fast.

In summary, if you thought you have used a service with no dedicated customer care line, try the Airtel Xtream Max service. You’ll most definitely appreciate the little support you receive from your current provider.

CONCLUSION

Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet is a good product, no doubts, but in Uganda, the unlimited internet landscape is becoming crowded with new providers entering the market, and very soon, Space X’s Starlink Internet service.

Based on the poor speeds you get that don’t compare to the package you pay for, and No direct support hotline to make complaints to in case of service downtimes or misunderstood invoices, Airtel Xtream Max Unlimited Internet is a service you should not think of installing at your home.

On Twitter, we shared our experience, and a Tweep suggested upgrading to the Xtream Plus Business plan which we ignored since a switch to Liquid Telecom was already in effect. But just in case your experience differs from ours, please share with us your views in the comment section below.

If you are wondering how to get a WakaNet PRO connection to your home without any 3rd party agents involved, well, below is how you can signup, get connected, and use MTN Uganda’s unlimited Internet offers with no caps to usage.

1. Download and install the MYMTN App if it’s not available on your phone.
2. Go to Buy.
3. From the tabbed list of options, select WakaNet PRO.
4. Tap Proceed.
5. Allow MyMTN to access your device’s location.
6. If the service is available in your area, click Continue, or manually select your location on the Check Wakanet availability map.
7. Tap Confirm.
8. Tap Request Service.
9. Enter your Email Address, tap Select a sales agent, then select Self-Service, and tap Proceed.
10. Select your desired MTN Unlimited Internet package, and confirm by tapping Continue.
11. When you receive the Success prompt, tap Continue.
12. Tap Continue to pay for your package via MTN Mobile Money.
13. Confirm your transaction summary, then tap Proceed, and enter your mobile money PIN to pay.
14. DONE: You will receive a confirmation message and MTN WakaNet Pro installers will contact you to install the service.

MTN Uganda Unlimited Internet Prices

Once you get an MTN WakaNet PRO connection to your home, you can route through the MTN Unlimited Internet prices that are capped by speed, and not data bundles. Majorly, MTN Uganda has LITE, Standard, and Premium unlimited Internet packages you can choose from as below.

In summary, there are many unlimited Internet providers in Uganda offering different packages and prices for a connection. However, MTN Uganda Unlimited Internet has stood out as one of the best choices in recent months due to a fast-roll-out calendar through which the telco is making the service available in most areas around Kampala.

We have not used the service before, but have tried Simba Fiber, Liquid Telecom, and Airtel which have reviews on our site. If you have used MTN Unlimited Internet, you can leave a comment of your experience and reaction to the overall prices of packages.

Well, it’s now easier to block your stolen Airtel SIM card by utilizing the new *100# menu that offers quick access to all Airtel services. In case you frighten on the decision to block your SIM card, here are 5 reasons as to why you should block access to it before replacement.

• Easy SIM card replacements/swap: Once you block your Airtel SIM card, it will be easy to swap and replace the card since it will no longer be active. This as well will lead to shorter times of getting your new card to work after swap.

• Security Concerns: Stolen SIM cards can be used to access sensitive information, such as online accounts and bank details. This is simple to achieve since the SIM holder will click the Forgot Password prompt and access any of your accounts.

• Protect your Personal Information: A SIM Card stores information both locally on the SIM storage, and online through the services such as Airtel Money, and more. Consider your contacts and text messages gone, but non-local data can be saved by blocking the card.

• Prevent Unauthorized Charges: Stolen SIM cards are used to make unauthorized calls, borrow money, and send text messages. Incurring charges on your account will force Airtel to bill you on any other SIM card registered in your names.

Block your Stolen Airtel SIM card

First, to block your stolen SIM card, be sure its registered in your names as a basic rule. This will save you time when approving the process, and a good ethics behavior since you will not be attacking someone else’s peace by limiting their access to the SIM. Hence, to block your SIM, follow the steps below.

1. Dial *100#
2. Select option 9 (My Account).
3. Select option 3 (Block Stolen sim/Number).
4. Enter the SIM card number (phone number) to block.
5. Enter the Airtel Money PIN of the number to block. (To verify you own it)
6. If you enter the correct PIN, the number is blocked immediately.
7. DONE: To confirm that your number is blocked successfully, call the customer care helpline 100, and ask an agent to inquire whether your SIM card number is blocked.

In conclusion, if you choose to block your stolen Airtel SIM card in Uganda, this is the best decision you can do to avoid fraudsters from using this small window of chance to make a fine amount of money using your identity. For the best window of chance, block your Airtel SIM card upon confirming that it’s stolen.

Compared to local mobile internet providers like MTN Nigeria, Glo, and others, Starlink offers bullet-fast speeds (by African standards) as compared to what they offer. By the time of writing, one of the first Starlink users in Nigeria has shared a screenshot comparing his Fiber internet provider versus Starlink.

The Fiber Internet provider offers download speeds at 14Mbps versus Starlink at 230Mbps. This means, there is a 150% increase in internet speeds when you switch to Starlink Internet in Nigeria as compared to your current provider.

Get Starlink Internet in Nigeria

1. Visit the Starlink Website.
2. Enter your city in the Service Address and click Order Now.
3. You will receive the Starlink is Available in your area section. Enter your First Name, Last Name, Phone Number, and active Email Address in the respective Contact Information fields.

4. Scroll down to Shipping Address, and click the Edit icon to set it to your exact location in Nigeria.

5. Scroll to Billing Information, enter the name on your VISA or Mastercard you wish to pay with, and Enter the Billing Address, Credit card number, Expiry month/year, CVV, and your National ID Number (NIN).

6. Verify the Total amount that should be deducted from your account credit card. By default, it should be NGN 268,584 (approximately USD 583.24).

7. Click Place order to process your payment and deduct the money from your card.

8. Once your payment is successful, you will receive a confirmation email on when you will receive your Starlink dish and indoor connection equipment. In most cases, expect to receive your equipment in 1 to 2 weeks.

When you receive your Starlink Internet equipment in Nigeria after at most 2 weeks, you will connect right away to the Satellite consolation and use the super fast broadband Internet offered by Space X. For now, as Elon Musk‘s Starlink team continues to negotiate with multiple African governments, the service is projected to spread to more countries like Zambia, South Africa, Uganda, and Kenya in 2024.

Cost of Starlink Internet in Nigeria

Upon delivery and installation of the Space X-owned equipment to your location in Nigeria, you get a 30-day free trial to test the Starlink Internet in Nigeria. After 30 days, you will pay NGN 19,260 per month (approximately USD 41.82) through the Starlink payment portal.

Much as a receiver’s name and phone number display well when sending money using Airtel money in Uganda, sometimes you could send a much higher amount than you intended to.

For example, imagine paying for a product that requires you to send money to the seller directly on their mobile? But by mistake, you send a higher amount above the agreed figure. You try calling the seller to refund the balance, only to find their mobile phone is switched off. That’s where reversing the money using Airtel money comes in.

To reverse money sent to a wrong number using Airtel Money, or a high figure sent to the correct number, initiate the reversal on your own as below:

• Open the Airtel money Text SMS that confirms the money you sent.
• Copy the Transaction ID in the message. OR, dial *185*10# and copy the ID from your recent transactions page.
• Dial *185# on your phone’s dial pad.
• Select option 10 (My Account).
• Select option 8 (My Transaction Reversals).
• Choose Option 1 (Initiate Transaction Reversal).
• Select option 1 (Other Send Transactions).
• Enter the Transaction ID you copied from your Airtel money message.
• Confirm the transaction details, sent amount, and receiver number.
• Enter your Airtel Money PIN to confirm the reversal.

Now, unlike MTN where you have to call the customer care line straight away, after initiating a transaction reversal on your phone using Airtel money, call the receiver and tell them to approve your reversal in order to receive the money-back instantly. To approve a reversal if you are the receiver, follow the steps below.

• Dial *185#
• Select option 10 (My Account).
• Choose option 8 (My Transaction Reversals).
• Select option 2 (Approve Transaction Reversal).
• Choose the transaction from the list (option 1) if it’s only 1 person that has started a reversal.
• Enter your Airtel Money PIN to confirm reversal.

However, in cases where you can’t notify the receiver to approve the reversal since only a few can accept to reverse the money back to your Airtel money account. Simply call the Airtel customer care line on *100* and tell the agent to approve your reversal in order to receive the money back.

If the transaction remains unapproved by the recipient or customer care agent after 3 days, your money is automatically reversed to your phone without any action required. However, you will receive your money back if your transaction meets the following requirements:

• The receiver must have not withdrawn the money.
• You must have initiated the transaction reversal as illustrated in the above steps.
• For instant reversals, call the customer care team on *100* to approve the reversal.

In summary, you can reverse money sent to a wrong number using Airtel Money by self-initiating the reversal, then have it approved by a customer care agent or the receiver.

Well, MTN Gaga was the first offer to grace the in-week data offers before the now non-exited Africell opted for a Don’t be cheated tagline, later on, the battle attracted Airtel with a disruptive Freaky Friday offer that lasts 3-days instead of the regular 1-day offer by the two telcos.

Now, the Airtel Freaky Friday popularity trail has attracted an MTN response to change its initial Wednesday-themed offer, to an all weekend data + voice minutes combo, in simple terms a copy and paste of the Airtel Freaky Friday offer, but with a Thursday start frame.

Well, today we dig deep into the now MTN Gaga Weekend Vs Airtel Freaky Friday offers. Below are the factors that influence our overall ranking.

To activate Airtel’s Freaky Friday, dial the *149*10# shortcode, from the list of options, and select your desired offer which can either be a 3-day or 24hours combo. Then, select between airtime or Airtel money to pay for your bundle.

To activate the MTN Gaga weekend offer, first, you must own a smartphone, second, you must have the MYMTN App installed on the device. The App is available through the Google Play and Apple stores for Android, iPhone users respectively.

Within the App, select Buy from the tabbed list of options, choose data from the drop-down list, then, locate MTN Gaga to choose from the available offers, and pay using MTN Mobile Money.

MTN Gaga Weekend Vs Airtel Freak Friday Bundles: The data + voice combos

Randomly, we have activated MTN Gaga Weekend and Airtel Freaky Friday offers on two separate occasions in a timeframe of 1 month. In our view, the two offers seem identical, but Airtel seemed to average with more to its offer combo than the Yello telco as listed in the comparison tables below.

As listed from the comparison table, MTN Gaga Weekend Vs Airtel Freaky Friday is an offer comparison that averages with similar combos. However, Airtel stands out with more data, as MTN levels up the expiry timeframe by 4 days, that’s more time to use up your data before it’s too late.

By activation, Airtel offers a much easier way to load the offer using a dedicated USSD shortcode, as MTN continues to stick its mobile apps the default path to load the Gaga Weekend offer. This means, if you don’t own a Smartphone, but own a simple Mobile WiFi (MiFi) device, you can’t load MTN’s offer.

On the other hand, the Airtel Freaky Friday 24 hours section is a great offer, but very uncalled for in such a weekend offer spree, to spice things up, Airtel should have opted for lower prices on the 1-day pack, but at such a price tag, the offer becomes a forest of combos, but with low relevance since a not very educated user could easily get confused on what to choose.

On a balanced scale, a customer can load both offers multiple times making both MTN Gaga Weekend and Airtel Freaky Friday quite excellent to use.

On a bad note, both offers are the worst you can opt to use, this is because connection speeds are capped, the telcos seem to care more about quantity, and less about internet connection quality.

In our speed tests, regular monthly, daily and weekly bundles host good connection speeds than what the two weekend offers maximize. We shall upload both MTN Gaga Weekend and Airtel Freaky Friday sample speed tests in our upcoming articles.

In summary, amidst a few advantages to the Gaga offer, Airtel Freaky Friday is the best offer you should use, this is because you get more data at a much lower price as compared to the Yello offer.

Previously, a customer was able to buy 15MBs at UGX 250, and 300MBs at UGX 2,000. But with the new changes, a customer now gets 25MBs instead of 15, and 365MBs instead of 300, at the same pricing.

As per the comparison, MTN Uganda has revised its daily data bundles by a quarter higher in a fashion similar to: the less you pay, the more you get. In simple terms, the telco has simply made a very small change to the bundles that could be irrelevant to the everyday user since the increased volume is quite close to the old data depletion cap.

In a nutshell, if you own the MTN Kamunye, or MTN Kabode phones, these bundles are for you, otherwise, if you own a smartphone, stay in the weekly, and monthly bundles league since only a small change has been made to the bundle structure. For now, we can expect a similar deduction by Airtel Uganda since customers may feel cheated with their unchanged structure.
